DRUMLINE

Looking for some cool beats to
play at your next retreat?
Or do you just want to see how long it takes the band to get out of step?

Download one of these cadences & print it out for YOUR drumline!

All cadences listed below are saved in Adobe Acrobat format.
To view & print, you'll need the free Acrobat Reader Plugin available here.

  "Plasma"
     by R. Nuttall

Looking for a good groovin' cadence for your high school drumline? Check out Nuttall's "Plasma" - a good "basics" training, including rolls & flams. Download the FREE Acrobat PDF of "Plasma" here to save & print it out for your drumline!

"Groovalistic"
     by James "Q-Tip" Gilliland

You want it short, loud & rockin'? Gilliland's cadence "Groovalistic" would also make a good stand jam. Download Acrobat PDF of "Goovalistic" here!

"StaffCAD v 1.1"
     by Brain Nozny

Forget football - the University of Miami also has a jammin' drumline! Check out their 2000 cadence by downloading the PDF of "StaffCAD" here! But, you better have the hauses to play it, 'cause it ain't easy!

"Spyder"
     arr. by Jeremy Stafford

Taking the old standard "Spyder" first played by Suncoast Sound back in '85, Jeremy gives us his version in this PDF of "Spyder" here. Great groove and strong fundamentals for your high school drumline!

"Little Prick "
     by Jeremy Stafford

We're not making any assumptions about who (or what) Jeremy named this cadence after. Written at the level of advanced high school, the "Little Prick" PDF can be downloaded here. Go ahead - grab it. (okay, I'll stop making bad jokes...)

"Spoonman"
     by Robert Anderson

Here's a cool beat for you advanced high school drumline types out there! Let me warn you - it's not all about bashing the sticks on the heads - there's some pretty cool phrasing & DYNAMICS in this cadence (what? who ever heard of dynamics in a drum cadence?!). Other than his own original stuff, Robert borrows parts of Al Murray's "Spider" bass drum beat & superimposes Fred Sanford's "Flamables" on top of it (boy, he had to reach DEEP into THAT bag of tricks - that stuff goes back to the early 80's)!

Check it out - you can download
the FREE Acrobat PDF of Spoonman here to save & print it out for your padres!

"Kadence"
     by Jeremy Stafford

The 1998 Goldwater Drumline sends us this cadence that obviously wins the "get to the point" title award. It's only a page long, but it's a great addition to the library! You can download the FREE Acrobat PDF of "Kadence" here to save & print it out for your drumline!

"Ants"
     by Scott Mullins

Scott sends this cadence, which is an arrangement of some copyrighted song from the Dave Matthews Band. It was last year's favorite of The Bryan High School Viking Drumline, soon to be a favorite of yours as well! Click here to download a PDF file for you to print out for YOUR drumline to play!

1997 Cadets of Bergen County's "Street Time"
     by Mike Stevens

I started digging through my files & found this great street beat from the Cadets from who knows what year by somebody (that's how bad my copy was). So, I put it into Finale and made a fresh new PDF file for you to check out, learn from & print out for YOUR drumline to play! (... did you say MY drumline? yeah, right)!

"
Teen Shelter"
     by Michael C. Allen

Mike threw down this cadence after listening to 311's first c.d. - it's the last tune on the disk, so you'll understand why it's not named so (too many four letter words for our young audience!). Anyway, it made a great cadence for the Southwest Texas State University Drumline, so here's your chance to grab a copy! Just in case you didn't know, Mike won the P.A.S. tenor individuals in '92, so there's a few "challenging" licks in the tenor part. Don't say we didn't warn you!

"
¡Ralu!"
     by Brian David Gill

You know what? I'm going to stop writing all this cr*p for every drum cadence. Exept a quick note to say that Gill's cadence for the Southwest Texas State University Drumline is very happenin'. I don't know where the name came from but check out this bad boy. I can kinda tell by the tenor parts that Baby Huey had a little hand in the mix. Surely no snare drummer could come up with that messed up stuff!

"Bass Fishin'"
     by Jon-Paul Tally

What does fishin' and cadences have in common? Maybe they both use live bait? (we won't get into THAT discussion again)! Maybe Jon-Paul Talley got so bored that he just grabbed some paper & a worm & scribbled out this cadence. I'm kinda glad that he sent it to me in Finale - at least it doesn't smell like fish! ;0)

"
Prosperity"
"Tea Time"
     by Shane Roney

Everybody needs a cadence that their high school can actually PLAY! Shane Roney from RoosterSoup.com sent us Prosperity and Tea Time that have a great groove (a requirement to any good cadence)! Send Shane a note and visit his website if you like his cadences! Maybe he'll write a few more for us!

"Puddin'"
     by John John

Leave it to a drummer to throw in a 7/4 bar to throw off the band! If cool grooves is what chu lookin' fo - look no futhu! Puddin' is another good one from the boys at Southwest Texas State. But, you better have some bass drums that can split rolls & 32nd's!

Odds & Ends

Gridit- coincidentally, I chose my screen name before I'd heard of this exercise.  Written by George Collins, this could be reffered to as a backwards or mirrored-grid exercise (the reason will become self-evident) where the 4-2-1 pattern is actually inverted in the second half.  Try it first w/ natural sticking.  This one is tricky, however, with the written sticking so have some patience.

Hemiolas exercise emphasizing 3:2 poly-rhythmic playing
